Mo'FoneMo’fone, the Bay Area’s own jazz and funk masters, are coming to their “favorite West Coast venue” – their words, not ours – to celebrate the release of their new album 'Fonology. “If Mo’Fone doesn't blow your socks off, you're not paying attention,” says the website AllAboutJazz. Their music “snaps and crackles like James Brown’s Famous Flames mixed with a New Orleans second line,” says JazzWeekly. “Somehow,” says esteemed local critic Andrew Gilbert, “the trio captures the kinetic power and sonic punch of a funk horn section and a brass band, but distilled to its essence.” Whether you call it jazzy funk or funky jazz, their music combines virtuoso skills with a madcap sense of fun as they charge through exciting originals and unexpected tunes by the likes of Weather Report, John Scofield, and Led Zeppelin – their take on “Fool in the Rain” is just about perfect!

If you’ve heard them but never seen them, you might be surprised to discover that their big sound and incredibly high energy come from only three musicians, Jeremy Steinkoler on drums, Jim Paterson on the mighty baritone sax and bass clarinet, and Larry De La Cruz on alto sax, clarinet, and flute. Tonight, in celebration of the new album, which features 11 new originals, they’ll be joined by special guests Marty Wehner on trombone and tuba, Stephen Kent on didgeridoo and percussion, and Danny Bittker on bass and tenor saxes. For a jazz-funk brew filled with delicious riffs and delectable grooves, quaff a little Mo’Fone at the Freight.
