Missy Raines & The New HipMissy Raines has long been recognized as the quintessential bluegrass bassist – the International Bluegrass Music Association just nominated her for its Bass Player of the Year award for the 22nd time in 23 years, and she’s won the award seven times – but her musical interests go even wider and deeper, encompassing jazz, indie rock, newgrass, and American roots music. Luckily, she’s put together the perfect band for exploring those interests. The Nashville Scene calls them “an ensemble perfectly balanced between brilliantly composed precision and equally brilliant spontaneity” and Strings Magazine says that Missy “continues to reach far beyond the confines of bluegrass with her inventiveness. Her roots remain distinctively bluegrass, while her originals and arrangements reflect her eclectic taste.” On their brand new album, New Frontier, Missy Raines & the New Hip add Missy’s cool, clear vocals to the mix, and the result is a revelation – why hasn’t Missy been singing all these years?

She was born in Short Gap, West Virginia, started touring as a teenager, worked with first-generation bluegrass greats like Mac Wiseman, Kenny Baker, Josh Graves, and Eddie & Martha Adcock, served a satisfying stint in the Claire Lynch Band, and has played with Peter Rowan, Laurie Lewis, Dudley Connell, Don Rigsby, and the Brother Boys. She names Shelby Lynne, Bonnie Raitt, and Lucinda Williams as the biggest influences on her singing, and says that adding her own vocals to the mix “was really just a natural evolution for me to sing more and more with this band.” The band features Ethan Ballinger on guitar, Jarrod Walker on mandolin, and Josh Fox on percussion, as well as Missy on bass, and together they make music that you won’t want to miss!
