Misner & SmithPlease join us as Freight favorites Sam Misner and Megan Smith celebrate the release of their brand new album, Seven Hour Storm, a collection of originals that shows off their sterling musicianship, poetic songwriting, and gorgeous harmony vocals. Sam plays guitar, Megan plays mandolin and upright bass, and when the two of them sing together, their blended voices ring with commitment and vitality. Their songs tell poignant stories rich with authentic detail and sharply drawn characters. Maverick Magazine has praised their “top quality original songs” and “superb harmonies,” and the website Hicks with Sticks has called them “a Bay Area treasure to be shared . . . with a touch for taking simple ideas and infusing them with unexpected meaning, metaphor, and imagery.”

Sam and Megan met at a Shakespeare festival in 2002 and appeared together in a production of Woody Guthrie’s American Song in Nevada City in 2004. They discovered a mutual love of American roots music, harmony singing, and down-to-earth songs that tell compelling stories. Since then, they’ve balanced their acting careers with a musical collaboration that has produced four albums, Halfway Home, Poor Player, Live at the Freight & Salvage, and now Seven Hour Storm. Their song “Madeline (Paradise Cracked)” won the Song of the Year award from the West Coast Songwriters Association in 2007. Last year, they returned to the Freight for a triumphant run of the Woody Guthrie show in celebration of Woody’s 100th birthday. Working as actors as well as musicians must be quite a juggling act, but when they’re on stage, they make it look easy and fun – and their subtle and sensitive new songs are a treat worth savoring!
