Mike Marshall and Caterina LichtenbergMike Marshall and Caterina Lichtenberg are two of the finest mandolin players in the world. Mike’s style is a blend of just about every musical influence imaginable, from bluegrass to jazz to the traditional Brazilian form known as choro. Caterina’s background is classical. Together, they play beautiful music, from Bach to Bulgarian folk music to their own subtle and lovely originals.

Caterina was born in Sofia, Bulgaria, and studied mandolin and guitar at the Cologne University of Music, where she now serves as the only Professor of Mandolin in Europe. She was a scholarship holder at the Richard Wagner Foundation and has won first prize in numerous national and international music competitions. She has performed with the Dresden Symphony Orchestra, the Aachen Chamber Orchestra, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Berlin, and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, as well as with the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet and Art Garfunkel.

Her husband Mike grew up in Central Florida and came to the Bay Area as a 19-year-old in 1978 to join the original David Grisman Quintet. He toured and recorded with Stéphane Grapelli, appeared on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, co-founded Montreux, co-founded the Modern Mandolin Quintet, co-founded Choro Famoso, created the Mandolin Symposium, and collaborated with such artists as Chris Thile, Edgar Meyer, Bela Fleck, Joshua Bell, Sam Bush, and many of Brazil’s finest musicians, including Hamilton de Holanda, Danilo Brito, and Jovino Santos Neto, not to mention producing dozens of albums for other artists and publishing seven books on mandolin playing. If you listen to Car Talk on NPR, that’s him on mandolin over the opening and closing credits. And he composed and plays the theme music for KQED’s Forum.
