Melissa Ferrick is coming to the Freight with a fierce band and an exciting new album, the truth is,
exploring love, loss, and relationships old and new with her trademark
fearlessness and honesty. In a career spanning two decades and 17
albums, she has worked with such musicians as Bob Dylan and Paul
Westerberg, Ani DiFranco and Kaki King, Paula Cole and Weezer. The
magazine American Songwriter praises her “lyrical dexterity and instrumental prowess.”
Melissa grew up in Ipswich, Massachusetts and studied at the Berklee
College of Music and the New England Conservatory of Music before moving
to New York City and playing coffeehouses in the East Village. She
opened for Morrisey on tour in 1991 and became part of a fresh wave of
young women – artists like Liz Phair and PJ Harvey – singing sharp-edged
alt-rock songs about modern life with frank honesty and a subversive
sense of humor. In the words of the website PopMatters, she
remains “an independent artist who’s making meaningful music that
carries with it the kind of gravitas and joy it did when she stepped up
to the mic for the first time all those years ago.”
Her band features Dave Brophy on drums, Matt Pynn on pedal steel, Kimon Kirk on bass, and Ro Rowan on cello.
