If you like Irish music, get ready for a special treat. An all-star lineup of extraordinary Irish musicians is coming to the Freight to present Masters of Tradition on Tour, which takes its name from the Masters of Tradition festival held each August in the town of Bantry, County Cork. Irish fiddle virtuoso Martin Hayes hosts the festival, and he’s hosting the tour as well. “The goal of this touring show is to focus on the details and nuances of Irish traditional music,” he says. “The performers are all masters of their instruments. Through their talent and abilities, the sophistication and artfulness of the music is revealed.” Along with Martin on fiddle, the show features Dennis Cahill on guitar, Iarla Ó Lionáird on vocals, Máirtín O’Connor on accordion, Cathal Hayden on fiddle, Seamie O’Dowd on guitar, and David Power on uilleann pipes.

Martin has been an All-Ireland fiddle champion six times over, and has taken home a National Entertainment Award, the Irish equivalent of the Grammy, for Traditional Musician of the Year. Dennis grew up in Chicago under the musical influence of his parents, who haled from the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry, and has recorded three albums with Martin, including their most recent, Welcome Here Again. Iarla Ó Lionáird of County Cork has received two Grammy nominations for his work with Afro Celt Sound System and has collaborated with artists like Peter Gabriel, Gavin Bryars, and Donnacha Dennehey, as well as recording three outstanding solo albums. Máirtín O’Connor, Cathal Hayden, and Seamie O’Dowd comprise the Máirtín O’Connor Band, which has an excellent new album called Going Places. David Power is a master of the uilleann pipes whose new album, My Love Is in America, has won praise from The Journal of Music in Ireland as “a satisfying and confident musical self-portrait of a talented, sensitive and imaginative player.”

“An absolutely outstanding group,” says the Irish Echo. “Each musician is worth seeing individually, but having them together in one show is something very special, indeed.” The show has won praise from the Boston Globe, the Irish Voice, and the Huffington Post. The evening will feature solos, duets, trios, and full group collaborations in a celebration of the best of Irish traditional music. In the words of the New Yorker, it’s “not to be missed.”
