Of Seminole and Aleut heritage, Mary grew up playing piano at age six, violin at eight, and guitar at ten. She wanted to join the high school band, and the only available instrument was the classical flute. After college, she played in a folk-rock band in Sacramento, but it wasn’t until her early 30s that she picked up a Native American flute for the first time. “It felt so natural," she says. “Melodies just came to me immediately. It was like there was a magic connection between me and this instrument.” With her third album, Beneath the Raven Moon, in 2003, she became the first Native American woman to win a Grammy, and her fifth album, Dance with the Wind, made her the first Native American to win two Grammy awards.
