Lindsay Lou & the FlatbellysFrom America’s Third Coast, on the shores of Lake Michigan, Lindsay Lou & the Flatbellys are heading back to the Freight for an evening of bluegrass, country, blues, and swing featuring high-energy originals about bank-robbing aunties, moonshine whiskey, and the vagaries of life and love. The band features Joshua Rilko on mandolin, Spencer Cain on bass, Keith Billik on banjo, Mark Lavengood on dobro, and of course Lindsay Lou on guitar and lead vocals. In a review of their debut album, Release Your Shrouds, bluegrassmusic.com calls them “a fresh new voice in modern bluegrass, with driving instrumentals and a straight-from-the-still quality to Lindsay’s voice that gives the project a strong sense of authenticity and heritage.” Just back from a tour of Germany, they have a brand new album, Ionia, named for their home base in Michigan, and recorded with loving care in four days this past October. The band, says PopMatters, channels “old-fashioned, high-octane bluegrass energy into arrangements that sound fresh and modern.” It’s a sound that doesn’t get old, a feel-good elixir that you just want to keep enjoying. Lindsay Lou has a deliciously easy way around a song, and if you’ve never heard her Lougrass music before, tonight is a perfect time to start!

Melody Walker & Jacob GroopmanMelody Walker and Jacob Groopman are two of the Bay Area's finest young bluegrass players. With their band Front Country they won the RockyGrass band competition in 2012 and the Telluride band competition in 2013, released a debut EP, This Is Front Country, in early 2014, and recently released a full-length album, Sake of the Sound, which is earning raves. “One listen and your view of bluegrass will never be the same,” says Folkwords. The BBC has called Front Country “the biggest new bluegrass band in America.” They recently released a duo record We Made It Home, that showcases their stellar vocal harmonies. Joining Melody and Jacob tonight is ace dobro player Mike Witcher. With impressive musicanship and infectious enthusiasm, this is a trio that sizzles and swings!
