Singer and composer Lisa Yvonne Ferraro joins forces with jazz heavyweight Houston Person and the terrific Tammy Hall Trio to pay tribute to Dakota Staton and her classic 1957 album, The Late, Late Show. Lisa, like Dakota, grew up in Pittsburgh. She has composed music for PBS, ABC, Polygram Films, and the Roberto Clemente Foundation, and has performed and recorded nationally and internationally with big band jazz ensembles, rock and soul bands, and in her duo with Erika Luckett. When she moved to the Bay Area and crossed paths with Houston and Tammy, she saw opportunity and seized it. “Meeting Houston Person, who has such a rich legacy with one of my greatest influences, Dakota Staton, and Tammy Hall, who also has a long, illustrious, and creative live performance history with Houston, was pure kismet. It is truly an honor and privilege to bring this performance to fruition with such gifted musicians honoring such an iconic talent with whom we all have such unique and distinctive connections.”
Houston grew up in South Carolina, joined the army, where he played saxophone with greats like Don Ellis, Eddie Harris, and Cedar Walton, and went on to release more than 75 albums as bandleader, recording with Etta Jones, Lena Horne, Lou Rawls, Horace Silver, Bill Charlap, Charles Brown, and Dakota Staton herself, with whom he worked for more than 40 years. He won the Eubie Blake Jazz Award in 1982.
The Tammy Hall Trio features Tammy on piano, Sam Bevan on bass, and Deszon Claiborne on drums. The San Francisco Chronicle profiled Tammy in an article titled “The Soul of Jazz Piano” – “with an uncluttered, telegraphic style marked by her classical training and deep roots in the Baptist church, she gracefully combines elegance and grit.”
