Ladysmith Black MambazoFresh from notching their 16th Grammy nomination - Best World Music Album of 2015 for Music from Inala - Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the celebrated a cappella group from South Africa, comes to the Freight for two nights of mesmerizing music and indomitable spirit. Winners of four Grammy awards, with more than 50 years of astounding audiences with their beautiful harmonies and beguiling rhythms, the group sings, dances, and delivers a resounding message of peace, love, and joy.

Joseph Shabalala founded the group in the early 1960s in his hometown of Ladysmith, located between Durban and Johannesburg. They won so many talent shows that they were barred from competing. By the time Paul Simon came calling in the mid-80s, Ladysmith Black Mambazo had long been the most successful singing group in the country. After making a huge contribution to the Graceland album – think “Homeless” and “Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes” – they followed up with a Grammy winner of their own, Shaka Zulu, and have kept on making marvelous music, including the 2013 Grammy winner for Best World Music Album, Singing for Peace Around the World, and 2014’s Always With Us. The band has recorded with Stevie Wonder, Dolly Parton, Sarah McLachlan, Josh Groban, Emmylou Harris, and Melissa Etheridge, contributed to the films Cry the Beloved Country, Invictus, A Dry White Season, Coming to America, and The Lion King, Part II, and even performed in a ballet, Inala.

If you’ve never seen Ladysmith Black Mambazo before, get ready for goosebumps!
