“The Kruger Brothers are just about as fine a band as I have ever played with,” said the late Doc Watson. The Bluegrass Journal says, “The Krugers are nothing short of magnificent.” Brothers Jens and Uwe Kruger left their home in Switzerland to pursue life as street musicians and met their “other brother,” Joel Landsberg, in New York City. Jens won last year’s Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass Music. “Coming to this country as an immigrant and to be accepted so warmly is amazing, and quite humbling,” he said. Uwe plays guitar, Joel plays bass, and all three brothers sing. Their music is deeply rooted in bluegrass tradition, but has grown to include their own original songs and compositions.

Fascinated by the music of Doc Watson, the band members moved to North Wilkesboro, North Carolina in 2003, met Doc, and had the honor of playing music with him. They received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to work on Music from the Spring, a symphonic suite that Jens composed and orchestrated. They premiered Appalachian Concerto, a concerto for banjo, bass, guitar, and string quartet, in 2010. They recently released their 17th album, The Spirit of the Rockies, after receiving a commission from the Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada. “I was instantly transformed by the breathtaking beauty of the mountains and lakes and immediately began imagining and creating music in my mind that could reflect such a landscape,” Jens says.
