KihnouaNamed with an ancient Greek word meaning “the difference,” Kihnoua presents music that explores new and intriguing territory. The group founded by Bay Area saxophonist and composer Larry Ochs in 2007, intermingles the sounds and structures of Western improvised music with ancient folk influences drawn from Africa, America, and Asia, prominently featuring Korean musical forms.

Scott Amendola, Dohee Lee, and Larry form the heart of the band, along with special guest, Dutch bassist Wilbert de Joode. A vital contributor to both the traditional and contemporary Asian American cultural arts landscape of the Bay Area, Dohee is a Korea-born performance artist, percussionist, dancer, and vocalist. A creative catalyst in an array of improvisational ensembles in jazz, blues, rock, and new music, drummer Scott is a mainstay in the Bay Area avant-garde jazz scene and beyond. A self- taught musician active in improvisational music groups throughout Europe, William’s unique tone color, his exploration of the outer registers, and his use of gut strings contribute to an instantly recognizable and intriguing sound. Larry has released dozens of CDs and toured Europe and Japan as a member of numerous bands including Rova Saxophone Quartet, as well as collaborating with folks such as Anthony Braxton and John Zorn.

The group has performed at festivals throughout Europe, and released a CD, Unauthorized Caprices.
