Kathy & CarolSingers Carol McComb and Kathleen Larisch return to the Freight with their gorgeous interpretations of British and Appalachian ballads, country tunes, Carter Family songs, and Carol’s timeless originals. The duo’s unique sense of harmony is remarkable for its use of shifting intervals, haunting dissonances, and counterpoint. Their a cappella songs send shivers down the spine.

Kathy and Carol began singing together in high school in Southern California, and performed extensively on the folk circuit in the 1960s, sharing stages with the New Lost City Ramblers, Bill Monroe, Phil Ochs, and many more. The duo's self-named 1965 Elektra album remains a timeless tribute to traditional British Isles and American folk music. “Their voices intertwine as if each were the mirror image of the other,” Nat Hentoff said in Cosmopolitan. “Their music is innocent – innocent of malice and greed – and it is unabashedly lovely.” After decades of pursuing separate careers, the pair reunited in 2005, resumed touring, and released a new album, Keepsake. Bask in their luminous voices tonight at the Freight.

Jody Stecher & Kate BrislinJody Stecher & Kate Brislin have been singing together for quite a while now – since 1974, in fact – and it’s fair to say they’ve got it down. “Their music captures the essence and core of traditional music,” says Bluegrass Unlimited. “Their bare-bones approach to this art form ranks them among the legends.” They’ve recorded seven albums as a duo, two of which received Grammy nominations for Best Traditional Folk Album. Kate used to sing in the Any Old Time String Band. Jody has served as mentor to countless stellar musicians. “Jody Stecher was basically my teacher,” David Bromberg says. “He opened my ears to more beautiful music than anyone else ever did.” With a vocal sound both soaring and soothing, startling harmonic and melodic inventiveness, and a deep evocative musicality, Jody & Kate perform a sterling repertoire of old time music, early country, traditional folk and bluegrass, and even an occasional contemporary song. Their sound and harmony, anchored by and entwined with Kate's emphatic rhythm guitar, has an impact that goes deeper than “notes” while Jody's brilliantly inventive instrumental forays on guitar, mandolin, and banjo add lift and humor to the mix.

Enjoy this rare opportunity to hear these two iconic and influential folk duos.
