Johnny Clegg is a singer, songwriter, dancer, anthropologist, and musical activist whose catchy crossover sound, a vibrant blend of Western pop and African Zulu rhythms, exploded onto the international music scene in the late 1970s when he and Sipho Mchunu formed Juluka, the first prominent mixed-race band in South Africa. It was illegal for mixed-race bands to perform publically in South Africa then, but Juluka, the Zulu word for sweat, managed to break down social barriers and produce five gold albums and two platinums. Johnny’s next band, Savuka, which means we have risen, sold a few million albums and earned a Grammy nomination for Best World Music Album of 1993. Since then, he’s recorded several solo albums, including his most recent, Human. Last year, he and his band toured America with Ladysmith Black Mambazo, and now he and his six-piece South African band are back to visit Berkeley.

Johnny was born in England in 1953, moved to the country formerly known as Rhodesia, then immigrated to South Africa. His mother was a cabaret singer, his stepfather was a crime reporter, and Johnny became an anthropologist, with a special interest in music. In 2012, he received one of South Africa’s highest honors, the National Order of Ikhamanga, for his “excellent contribution to and achievement in the field of bridging African traditional music with other music forms, promoting racial understanding among racially divided groups in South Africa under difficult apartheid conditions, working for a non-racial society, and being an outstanding spokesperson for the release of political prisoners.” Johnny is known for his exuberant performing style and his audacious live shows.

Jesse Clegg—Johnny’s son—is a young alt-rocker who has sold more than a million albums in his native South Africa. Jesse is an official ambassador for the Nelson Mandela Foundation and has played Radio City Music Hall alongside such artists as Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, and the Black Eyed Peas.
