Joan ArmatradingIs there anyone who has sung of love and longing with more tenderness and beauty than Joan Armatrading? “I am not in love / but I’m open to persuasion,” she sings on her classic, “Love and Affection,” before asking the impossible question: “If I can feel / the sun in my eyes / and the rain on my face / why can’t I feel love?” She doesn’t offer easy answers. She simply poses the questions with her own unique combination of vulnerability and strength, defenselessness and dignity. After 42 years of performing, this musical treasure is coming to the Freight on her farewell tour. “These concerts will be me solo on stage playing the guitar and piano and singing,” she says. What could be better?

Joan was born on the Caribbean island of Saint Kitts in 1950 and moved to Birmingham, England when she was seven. At 14, after convincing her mother to buy her a pawn-shop guitar, she started playing and writing her own songs. At 22, she released her first album, Whatever's For Us, and since then, she’s released 19 more, filled with brilliant originals that combine the best of pop with influences from jazz, rock, reggae, gospel, folk, and blues. The Scotsman describes her songs as "some of the most deeply personal and emotionally naked of our times.” Along with earning three Grammy nominations and winning an Ivor Novello Award, Joan earned her university degree with honors at age 50, ran a marathon at age 57, and has received numerous honorary degrees. Oh, and the Queen of England has awarded her an Order of the British Empire. Her music has touched millions, and her voice is unforgettable in its richness, nuance, and gorgeous tone.
