Jane Siberry does not play it safe. When confronted with an abyss, she leaps. Her songs explore the unknown and the unknowable, twisting their way into intimate places, embracing the vast and the minuscule. It’s probably no accident that she majored in microbiology at the University of Guelph in her native Canada. Once out of the laboratory, she strived for many years to find the formula for a hit record, but eventually settled on the more rewarding quest to express the inexpressible. Jon Pareles, writing in the New York Times, praised her “ever-encouraging voice” and her “sly, purposeful, savvy benevolence,” and offered an astute summary of her current sound: “Although she has delved into various styles, toying with electronics and jazz, at the core of her music are folky guitar chords or a stately piano that hints at church and chamber music.”

Jane, known for a few years as Issa, has worked with such luminaries as Brian Eno, Patty Larkin, Joe Jackson, Darol Anger, Peter Gabriel, and the Indigo Girls. Her haunting duet with k.d. lang, “Calling All Angels,” was featured on the soundtrack of Wim Wenders’ film, Until the End of the World, and also on the soundtrack of Pay It Forward. She’s released more than 20 albums and published two books of prose-poems. “I believe music is a privilege,” she says. “I feel very lucky to call myself a musician. It is one of the ways we can stay connected to our deepest selves.
