James, who grew up in Texas on a steady diet of Johnny Cash and Roy Acuff records, has evolved into his own unique brand of deep-voiced Southern white independent songwriting folk-country rocker with great guitar licks, a great voice, and great lyrics. "He creates a novel's worth of emotion and experience in four minutes of blisteringly stark couplets," says the Washington Post, adding, "What gets overlooked, however, is that he's an accomplished rock guitar player."

His first album, released in 1989, marked the beginning of a series of acclaimed projects including Childish Things (2005) which spent six weeks at No. 1 on the Americana Music Radio Chart and won the Americana Music Awards for album and song of the year, respectively. His craft is constantly informed and inspired by over twenty years of relentless touring, performing over 150 shows a year.
