The Freight and Oakland arts organization Crosspulse are proud to present the International Body Music Festival Concert and day of workshops—a mini-festival held here while the full six-day annual event is produced in São Paulo, Brazil this year. Led by Artistic Director Keith Terry, the concert is a sizzlin smorgasbord of contemporary and traditional body music featuring California-based artists, including Zapateado Mexicano with Los Cenzontles, flamenco artists Cerro Negro, outstanding hambone from Danny "Slapjazz" Barber, belly dancer Elizabeth Strong with Dan Cantrell and Evan Fraser, the stepping of Khalid Freeman, and of course body music with Keith Terry and Evie Ladin. Today's body music "mini-fest" also features an exciting array of classes in culture-specific styles, teacher trainings for both music and classroom teachers, a free family workshop, and more! Don't miss this irresistible hand-clapping, foot-stomping, chest-whomping extravaganza!

Richmond-based Los Cenzontles dig deep into Mexican traditions to promote dignity, pride and cultural understanding. The group has pioneered revivals of Mexican roots music in California, bringing traditions to new generations, including the spectacular Zapateado Mexicano they will perform tonight.

Cerro Negro features flamenco palmas and footwork from Frank Giordano, Dusty Brough, and John Martin III, joined tonight by two of the Bay Area's finest dancers, Juan del Valle and Clara Rodriguez. The group's passionate sound transcends generations and appeals to a wide variety of musical tastes because of its coupling of exotic percussion and emotional vocals.

Danny "Slapjazz" Barber is a master of traditional African American hambone body percussion. Based in San Diego, Slapjazz has appeared on concert stages throughout the U.S., sitting in with such bands as the Carolina Chocolate Drops and the Bayou Brothers Band. He has a singular style with beautiful syncopations.

Elizabeth Strong's lifelong immersion in Middle Eastern dance and Eastern folk music includes years spent researching dance in Bulgaria, Tunisia, Greece, Morocco, Egypt, and Turkey. Tonight she is joined by multifaceted musicians Dan Cantrell and Evan Fraser.

Bending and blending traditional and contemporary music and dance, allowing rhythm to forge connections in unexpected ways, Keith Terry with Evie Ladin brings together diverse influences—jazz and world music, Appalachian hambone and step dancing traditions-with delightful humor and skill.

Khalid Freeman is a stepper, dancer, and choreographer based in Los Angeles. He has toured internationally with STOMP, and both appeared in and choreographed for the seminal film Stomp the Yard. He also leads a percussive dance/stepping group, Molodi.
