Houston JonesThe virtuoso musicians in Houston Jones have accumulated several lifetimes of experience – from gospel revival tents to Irish pubs, from the Great Plains to the bayou, from a church in Cape Cod to a punk club in Berkeley – and somehow they translate all that experience into an explosive blast of bluegrass with echoes of blues and country, honky tonk and funk. The San Francisco Chronicle describes the band as “a confluence of sublime talent,” and adds, “you may not think a band with traditional bluegrass instrumentation and guys who've been around the musical block more than a few times could remain fresh, much less grow even better with each new CD. But when it comes to the Bay Area band Houston Jones, think it!” The band features Glenn Houston of the Waybacks and Hearts on Fire on lead guitar, Travis Jones on guitar and lead vocals, Peter Tucker on drums, Joshua Zucker on bass, and Henry Salvia on piano. Add them all up and you’ve got a foot-stomping, heart-thumping extravaganza of acoustic mayhem that’s worth checking out!

Susie GlazeSusie Glaze & the Hilonesome Band return to the Freight to play their blend of classic folk music with rough-edged stories of tragedy and fate, all with orchestral arrangements sounding like chamber music gone folk! A lush newgrass Americana folk fusion quintet presenting gorgeous eclectic blends of mountain folk and exciting new grassy and Celtic-inspired originals, all with the remarkable voice of Susie Glaze. Roz Larman, host of KPFK’s FolkScene, says that Susie “has one of the most beautiful voices in bluegrass and folk music today. She performs a song straight from her heart and soul.” In the words of Entertainment Weekly, “she can blow the roof off any joint lucky enough to book her.” A Tennessee native who grew up in the shadow of the Grand Ole Opry, Susie moved to Southern California, recorded two solo albums, and formed the Hilonesome Band, featuring Rob Carlson on lead guitar, Mark Indictor on fiddle, Steve Rankin on mandolin, Fred Sanders on bass, and Susie herself on lead vocals, mountain dulcimer and guitar. She and the band have just released their ninth album together, Not That Kind of Girl. According to Bluegrass Unlimited, “If there were a word to describe this fine band, it would be sophisticated. They draw influences from disparate sources to meld their sound. The level of musicianship is exemplary.”
