George Cole QuintetThe George Cole Quintet always sets the Freight stage swinging! With George’s fiery guitar as its centerpiece, this virtuoso Bay Area band will immerse you in their infectious, original jazz groove. Says Art Thompson of Guitar Player magazine: “Cole’s excellent Django-style guitar work and his band’s enticing instrumental and vocal harmonies make them a must—see for any fan of vintage jazz.”

As the quintet’s latest CD Riverside Drive exemplifies, their original tunes sound like they could well have been penned by the likes of George Gershwin or Irving Berlin, resulting in music that is accessible, melodic, and appealing. Each virtuoso in the group contributes to their “Eurocana” style, drawing inspiration from the dynamic string-driven swing created by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli in 1930s Paris, while hearkening back to some of the finest composers of the Great American Songbook.

In addition to George’s superb compositions, guitar, and vocals, the band includes show stopping vocals by Mary Jenson, virtuoso violinist Annie Staninec, the driving rhythm guitar of Jimmy Grant, and swinging upright bass from Christopher Bastian.
