Virtuoso saxophonist and composer George Brooks, in his restless search for musical excellence and cross–cultural innovation, joins forces with frame drum phenomenon Glen Velez and south Indian Chitravina (fretless lute) virtuoso Ravikiran for an uplifting evening of global harmony. The program draws from the rich musical traditions of India, the Middle East, North Africa, and the Americas, with the extraordinary south Indian percussionist Trichy Sankaran on mridangam, and captivating vocalist Lori Cotler as added bonuses.
Bridging the worlds of jazz and Indian classical music, George has worked with everyone from world music visionary Zakir Hussain to minimalist godfather Terry Riley, and Etta James to the Kronos Quartet. A five-time Grammy Award winner, frame drum legend Glen Velez has single-handedly popularized this ancient instrument for the modern world with what the New York Times refers to as "a dazzling galaxy of timbres and inflections...remarkable rhythmic fireworks." Ravikiran has made great contributions as a vocalist, composer, and virtuoso of the 21-string slide instrument, the
chitravina. He has successfully introduced the instrument to the world
music scene through collaborations with top-notch musicians from jazz,
Western classical, African, Brazilian, and Mid-Eastern genres.
