This event brings together for the first time the Bay Area’s
four internationally known gamelan orchestras, as well as two groups that
fuse Indonesian and American culture through music and dance. The
concert features traditional gamelan music and dance representing Bali, Java
and West Java, as well as new work by today’s generation of artists from
both sides of the world. There will also be free workshops and
performances, and Indonesian Arts & Crafts vendors in the lobby beginning at 2:00 pm.
Each of the traditional groups at this event was founded by an extraordinary
Indonesian artist, and each has been sustained by the commitment of its
group members along with the support of their local and global
communities. Many of today’s performers have spent years or decades
studying, performing, and passing these arts on to new generations, and
forming new bonds and creating new communities in the process. This event
is a part of the Indonesian-American Cross Cultural Music Project, which
brings these communities together in celebration of art, music and culture.
Program 1 at 3PM features members of Gamelan Sari Raras in a small
Gamelan Gadhon ensemble performing vocal music of Central Java. Gadung
Kasturi will present traditional Balinese dance, and will also feature Lestari
Indonesia dance group performing classical Javanese dance with music
arranged for Balinese gamelan by Midiyanto.
Both programs will feature works by the cross-cultural bands Gamelan X
and Purnamasari. The event features Indonesian Arts & Crafts vendors and
free workshops and performances in the lobby starting at 2:00PM
