A perennial Freight favorite, the exuberant Barbara Higbie hosts some of the Bay Area’s finest musicians in a fundraising concert for the Freight & Salvage. Tonight’s lineup includes the Shelley Doty Band, Stevie Coyle, Austin Willacy, Girl Named T, and special guests Steve Meckfessel and Alison Burns, which all adds up to a fabulous evening highlighting the caliber and diversity of the Freight, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting public awareness and understanding of traditional music!
An exuberant, multi-talented fiddle and piano virtuoso in many musical styles, as well as the possessor of a lovely singing voice and a stage presence like a ray of sunshine, Barbara's music combines technical brilliance and pure joie de vivre. Barbara's rich background includes classical piano and violin studies, immersion in the musical culture of Ghana, ground-breaking work with the jazz-folk-bluegrass band Montreux and with composer Terry Riley, and acclaimed collaborations with singer Teresa Trull.
Shelley, known for her masterful guitar licks, soulful voice, and charismatic stage presence, applies her skills in an acoustic performance. She performs her rock, R&B, jazz, and funk-inspired tunes with raw energy, a jubilant imagination, and freshness.
In addition to fronting her own band The X-tet, she is a member of Sistas in the Pit, was one of the founders of Jambay, and has played with and recorded CDs for the avant-punk-classical Bonfire Madigan (Kill Rock Stars), Kindness (rocktronica), and many others.
A veteran of the infamously talented string band, The Waybacks, Stevie has stepped out as a solo act in recent years with his quirky, insightful songs. His expressive, sometimes explosive fingerstyle acoustic guitar is an essential element of his insightful storytelling in song, as Stevie shares his unique philosophy and observations of the life of humans on the planet.
Singer-songwriter Austin is the veteran of many a great Freight evening, both as a solo performer and as a member of groundbreaking all-vocal rock band the House Jacks. In his smart, muscular folk rock originals, Austin affirms life and inspires hope, even as he lays down an irresistible groove. Austin has performed with Bonnie Raitt, Ray Charles, James Brown, and rising stars like Jem, Rachael Yamagata, and Amos Lee.
Multi-talented, self-taught one-woman music machine Theresa Sawi—the Girl Named T—recently recorded her first full-length album of original pop/rock, which draws on formative influences including the great British and American pop records of the 1960s. With one of her songs featured on MTV’s hit show Awkward and an interview on NPR’s All Things Considered, T gained growing public attention over the past year.
Singer-songwriter Steve Meckfessel and Scottish jazz chanteuse Alison Burns lend their talents to the show.
