Join us today for our Family Open House! This family-friendly edition features free performances and activities for folks, kids, and folks with kids. In addition to two concert sets (Asheba at 11:15am and Rudy Trubitt & Hiram Bell at 1:00pm) there will be a musical instrument petting zoo and a children’s song cirle upstairs.

Asheba is a musical storyteller who specializes in calypso, the musical and folkloric oral tradition of his homeland, Trinidad. Stories of hope and happiness are the focus of his songs, which range from original lullabies to up-tempo tunes to remakes of classics such as “Itsy Bitsy Spider” and “You Are My Sunshine.” Any Asheba show also features children and parents alike joyfully singing, clapping, and dancing along! Now based in Oakland, Asheba has been performing at children's play spaces, museums, schools, hospitals, and festivals for nearly 15 years.

Rudy Trubitt and Hiram Bell grew up in the next-door valleys of Manoa and Palolo on the island of Oahu. They met when hired as musicians for a children's music show. Although the gig was fun, the promoter never paid the band! Despite this early setback, the two persevered, reviving their musical partnership when they found themselves both living in the Bay Area. They've been playing together on and off for nearly 20 years. Both appear regularly at The Freight. Rudy hosts The Patchwork Series, while Bell teaches beginner and intermediate ukulele classes. They'll combine their considerable talents (guitar, ukulele, harmonica, porch-board and more) in an engaging, interactive performance for young and old alike.

Dancing in the aisles, singing on the stairs, and hijinx in the lobby are sure to ensue as we invite the entire music-making community (including you!) to meet for this daytime extravaganza.
