With an engaging conversational style, Ellis Paul delivers his tunes in a high, clear voice that gets you right in the heart. He tells touching and tender stories in songs that meld a pop sensibility with an abiding respect for the storytelling tradition of masters like Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger. His finely chiseled, deeply humane songs have won him more than a dozen Boston Music Awards. He’s released 18 albums in his twenty-year career, including, most recently, a children’s album, A Hero for You, and a holiday album, City of Silver Dreams, that the website No Depression calls “a collection with multi-faceted personality, offering both melodic romanticism and a folk styled humor that twinkles with good natured fun.” Ellis was born in 1965 in For Kent, Maine, a potato-farming town near the Canadian border. He went to Boston College on a track scholarship, got injured his junior year, and took up guitar. Soon he was singing at open mics. After working as a teacher and a social worker for a few years, he quit his day job and started earning a living as a musician. His songs have been featured in television shows and movies, including the Farrelly Brothers’ Me, Myself and Irene and Shallow Hal. “Despite his success and sense of history,” says the New York Times, he “remains an Artist with his eye on the future and an interest in discovering the transformative potential of his music.” His shows are inspiring and intimate, full of wonder and whimsy and beautiful songs.
The Irish Times calls Peter Mulvey “a joy to see” and “a phenomenal performer with huge energy, a quick-fire, quirky take on life, and an extraordinary guitar style.” The Washington Post praises “the subtle power of his voice, a husky, hushed baritone,” and calls it “at once sophisticated and intimate.” Based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin after stints in Dublin and Boston, Peter has released 15 albums, including his latest, The Good Stuff, a dazzling collection of songs by other artists, from Duke Ellington to Tom Waits, Willie Nelson to Thelonius Monk. Peter is also a wonderful songwriter in his own right, with scores of scintillating originals, full of wit and passion. “The trouble with poets,” he sings, “is they talk too much” – and he has no shortage of words himself, but only just enough to astound and entertain.
