The great thing about the young Boston-based band The Deadly Gentlemen is not their technical proficiency—though these guys do have mad skills—it’s the music they create: joyful, playful, beautiful. You could say they speak bluegrass with a rock and roll accent. Their third and latest album, Roll Me, Tumble Me, features bluegrass instruments on songs that the Lonesome Road Review calls “simultaneously dreamy and earthy with a vibe that is both trippy and grounded.”
Greg Liszt, banjo and vocals, earned a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from MIT and immediately went on tour playing banjo for Bruce Springsteen. In his spare time, he co-founded Crooked Still. Stash Wyslouch, guitar and vocals, brings a heavy-metal passion for raking on guitar and screaming in harmony. Dominick Leslie, mandolin and vocals, has played with banjoist Noam Pikelny, the Infamous Stringdusters, and the Grant Gordy Quartet. Mike Barnett, fiddle and vocals, started touring at 15 with bluegrass legend Jesse McReynolds and has toured with the Tony Trischka Band and the David Grisman Quintet. Adam Chaffins, bass and vocals, has toured with Susan Werner, the Belfry Fellows, World Party, and the Carter Brothers. Tonight the band will be joined by some very talented friends.
Rushad Eggleston, from just down the coast in Carmel, was the first string student admitted to the Berklee College of Music on a full scholarship, and before graduating made his recording debut, joining fiddle masters Darol Anger, Michael Doucet, and Bruce Molsky in the group Fiddlers 4. Since then, Rushad has toured extensively with Fiddlers 4, Darol Anger's Republic of Strings, Crooked Still, and Tornado Rider.
The Bay Area’s Brittany Haas is one of the most influential fiddlers of her generation. She began touring at the age of 14, released her first solo album at 17, studied baboons at Princeton, joined Crooked Still, and played on Steve Martin’s Grammy-winning album, The Crow. She currently lives in Nashville and plays in a number of different combos with other amazing artists.
Bursting out of the burgeoning old time scene in Portland, Oregon, Foghorn Stringband plays fiddle tunes with the energy and edginess of punk rock, and delves into vintage country, honky-tonk, and Cajun music with four exceptionally strong vocalists who know their way to the heart of a song. With Sammy Lind on fiddle, Caleb Klauder on mandolin, Nadine Landry on bass, and Reeb Willms on guitar, the band has a sound that could be coming to you from an Appalachian front porch or a big console radio in a 1930s living room. They play old time music deeply rooted in the American folk tradition, but they put their own stamp on it, carried along by their driving rhythms and fierce determination to keep traditional music alive and exciting.
