It’s hard to say what’s better – David Grisman’s superb musicianship or his ability to bring together superb musicians. He’s played with everyone from Jerry Garcia to Stephane Grapelli, James Taylor to Hal Blaine. Tonight the mandolin maestro returns to his bluegrass roots, joined by his usual all-star lineup of stalwarts – Keith Little on 5-string banjo, Jim Nunally on guitar, Chad Manning on fiddle, and Sam Grisman on bass.

They play “bluegrass as Bill Monroe intended it: standard instrumentation and song structures, high harmonies, and breakneck breakdowns,” says the All Music Guide. They cover the classics – Carter Family, Stanley Brothers, Flatt & Scruggs, Charlie Poole – as well as the occasional dazzling original, like “Dawggy Mountain Breakdown.”

David started in bluegrass back in 1964 with Red Allen and the Kentuckians. He started the Even Dozen Jug Band with John Sebastian and Maria Muldaur, and Old and in the Way with Peter Rowan and Jerry Garcia. Since then, he’s gone on to explore jazz and swing and just about every other musical influence in his own unique brand of what he calls “dawg” music, a highly intricate, richly textured blend of styles and traditions from around the world. Everyone in the band has a long list of credits – but suffice it to say that these dawgs can hunt! Their shows usually sell out, so get your tickets early.
