Dar Williams is such a wonderful songwriter, it’s easy to forget how beautifully she sings—until you hear her voice again and feel the emotion she conveys in every note. Dar is a master of the perfect line and the powerful twist—her songs transport you to unexpected places, then take you even further, to understanding, wonder, pure joy. From “When I Was a Boy” and “The Babysitter’s Here” to “The Beaty of the Rain” and “Mad River,” she has been crafting masterpieces that linger in the mind and become part of your own experience. The New Yorker has called her “one of America’s very best singer-songwriters” and Telegraph UK calls her “a songwriter of immense talent” and describes her new album, Emerald, as “a work of real depth.”

The new release, her ninth studio album, continues her career-long commitment to capturing life as she lives it, which lately has included teaching a course titled “Music Movements in a Capitalist Democracy” at her alma mater, Wesleyan University, working with children at several summer camps, leading songwriting workshops, getting involved with the workings of her village on the Hudson River, and writing a book about the ways she has seen towns becoming more independent and prosperous over her twenty years of touring. The album features collaborations with Jill Sobule and the Milk Carton Kids, and guest appearances from Richard Thompson, Jim Lauderdale, and Suzzy and Lucy Roche. “I’m now experiencing the fruits of the alternative culture I was part of in the 1990s,” Dar says. “I chose to stay with my friends, to stay with my culture. That turns out to have been the sturdiest structure I could have built for myself. And it’s in my songs, it’s in my teaching. I’m a believer in what can happen when we make music together.” Get your tickets early. Dar’s shows at the Freight tend to sell out.

Jenny O is a singer-songwriter from Long Island who started her music career in Los Angeles, released an EP, Home, and an album, Automechanic, and recently spent a year in Nashville writing songs. Her music is ethereal and dreamy, but with a rock and roll edge, and she has a lovely, light voice that floats across her catchy melodies and delicately conveys the subtlest nuance. LA Weekly named her one of the Ten Best Young L.A. Singer-Songwriters in 2014, and the Song Writers Hall of Fame awarded her the Holly Prize in 2015. Several of her songs have been licensed for film, television, video games, and commercials, and public radio’s California Report “puts her squarely in the middle of a venerable tradition of California musicians mixing country and folk earnestness, refined pop craft, and rock and roll heart.”
