“I hope this music thing works out,” Crystal Bowersox says, “because I am a really bad waitress.” Fortunately, she’s an artful songwriter and a soulful singer with a warm alto that can belt out a big ballad or gently coax a delicate melody. She gained fame on American Idol, finishing as the runner-up in 2010. Since then, she’s recorded two albums, Farmer’s Daughter and the soon-to-be-released All That for This, produced by Steve Berlin, who has worked with Los Lobos, Sheryl Crow, and John Lee Hooker. The Washington Post calls her “bluesy and soulful, with a voice incapable of artifice.” She “expertly works the territory between folk and country,” according to the Chicago Tribune.

Crystal started busking at train stations at 17 and went on an international café tour that took her to Mexico, Turkey, and Tennessee. The Idol experience gave her the chance to perform with Harry Connick Jr., Joe Cocker, and Alanis Morrisette. “The silvery residue from Idol has faded a bit,” she says, “and now it’s all about what’s true and real in my world.” Her world is sounding pretty good these days. Come to the Freight and take a listen.

Montë Mar plays dreamy Southern California pop influenced by jazz, folk, 1970s rock ‘n’ roll, and world music. Guitarist and songwriter Brian Green formed the band after touring with the likes of Michael Bublé, Andrea Bocelli, Chris Botti, and David Archuleta.
