“Just about everyone I meet tells me that the cello is their favorite instrument,” says Mark Summer, internationally-renown jazz cellist and composer. Considering the implication of that statement and his own ability to roam in almost any musical soundscape, Summer and jazz pianist Ken Cook present Celloland. In Celloland, Summer and Cook present a passionate mix of jazz, folk, rock, Brazilian and Argentinian music celebrating the intriguing connections with classical music. Mark Summer is co-founder of the two-time Grammy®-winning Turtle Island Quartet and was the quartet's cellist for 30 years until 2015. Summer continues to develop his unique and multi-timbered style, which incorporates virtuoso jazz soloing, distinctive bass lines and extensive percussive techniques adapted from the guitar, bass and drums.

In addition to his extensive touring with Turtle Island, Summer has performed and recorded with jazz vocalist Tierney Sutton, contributing two vocal/cello arrangements on her Grammy®-nominated album “After Blue” in 2013. He recorded and toured with clarinet virtuoso Paquito D’Rivera in a trio with Israeli jazz pianist Alon Yavnai on the Grammy®-nominated album “Jazz Chamber Trio” in 2005. As an orchestral soloist, Summer debuted, “Force of Nature,” a concerto for jazz cello and orchestra written for him by David Balakrishnan in Europe and the U.S. in 2011. His best known and oft-performed solo cello composition “Julie-O” was used in NBC‘s “Parenthood” and featured in a 2016 Apple Watch commercial.

Ken Cook is a pianist, educator and composer based in the Bay Area. He is a graduate of the Jazz Performance Masters program at the New England Conservatory and studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston on a Chick Correa scholarship. His love of Afro Cuban music led him to Cuba in 2006 to study the rich history and complexities of Cuban music at the National Conservatory in Havana. He is equally at home playing jazz on Friday, Brazilian music on Saturday and Salsa on Sunday. Cook has performed in Europe, Latin and South America and much of the eastern U.S. with various groups including the great New Orleans singer Johnny Adams. In addition to Celloland with Mark Summer, he leads his own trio and often performs with blues singer Terrie Odabi, vocalist Deborah Winters, Brazilian guitarist/composer Ricardo Peixoto, and Bay Area Afro Cuban All Star John Calloway. Cook currently holds the Jazz Piano chair in the Jazz Studies Department at Sonoma State University.
