Celia Ramsay & Shay Black
Celia Ramsay & Shay Black, two great singers with a passion for the songs of Scotland and Ireland, celebrate the release of their new album, Singer’s Request, along with some of their favorite musical friends, Patrice Haan, Charlie Hancock, and Michael Black.

Celia grew up with a love for the traditional ballads of Scotland and for American pop and jazz classics of the 1930s and 40s. Both traditions, she says, lean heavily on songs about love and its trials, tribulations, and triumphs. She worked as a letterpress printer in her 20s, then started a winery with her husband in a garage. In her spare time, she sang in a bluegrass band and called contra dances. Now her kids are grown, and she’s recording albums, Songs of My Father’s People: Mostly Scottish Songs About Love in 2012, I'll Just Lie About It in 2013, and this new one with Shay.

Shay grew up in Dublin, moved to England in the early 1970s, and eventually settled in Berkeley. He has recorded one album with his brothers Michael and Martin as the Black Brothers, and three with Michael, Martin, and sisters Frances and Mary as the Black Family. He has also played and recorded with Stan Hugill and the sea shanty group Stormalong John, the Irish band Garva, the California Revels, Shira Kammen, Peter Kasin and Richard Adrianovich, Sharon Knight, and Steve Baughman.

It’s fair to say that both Celia and Shay have a healthy sense of humor, and this show should feature plenty of great stories along with a wonderful trove of songs.
