The California Honeydrops don’t just play music—they throw parties. Led by dynamic vocalist, guitarist, and trumpet player Lech Wierzynski and drawing on diverse musical influences from Bay Area R&B, funk, Southern soul, Delta blues, and New Orleans second-line, the Honeydrops bring vibrant energy and infectious dance-party vibes to their shows. They’ve taken the party all over the world: on nine European tours, featured slots at such premiere festivals as Monterey Jazz, High Sierra, and Outside Lands, and recent performances supporting B.B. King, Dr. John, Buddy Guy, and Allen Toussaint. Whether in those high-profile performances or in more intimate venues where the band members can jump down from the stage and boogie on the dance floor, the California Honeydrops’ shared vision and purpose remain the same: to make the audience dance and sing.

The Honeydrops have come a long way since Lech and drummer Ben Malament started busking in an Oakland BART station, but the band has stayed true to that organic, street-level feel. With the addition of Johnny Bones on tenor sax and clarinet, Lorenzo Loera on keyboards, and Beau Bradbury on bass, they’ve built a powerful full-band sound to support Lech’s vocals. Born in Warsaw, raised by Polish political refugees, Lech learned his vocal stylings from contraband American recordings of Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, and Louis Armstrong, and later at Oberlin College and on the club circuit in Oakland. Bringing all those influences together with the rest of the band’s diverse experiences into a unified musical vision, the California Honeydrops just released their fifth album, A River’s Invitation. "I've always loved the feeling of those early records by artists like Ray Charles or Bill Monroe or Bob Marley when they're just figuring out their vision – combining their favorite sounds to create a whole new genre,” Lech says. “You can hear them stumbling and fumbling around with old ideas and influences, but something beautiful and new is happening. That's how it felt making this record. I doubt we'll start a trend – let alone a genre – but I think what we've made is truly original and rootsy to the bone.”
