The 10th annual Berkeley Old Time Music Convention continues with banjo virtuosity, classic country harmony, and rowdy buckdancing.
Old time fiddle and banjo music got a huge boost from the movie Cold Mountain, and we’re proud to present one its important musical contributors, North Carolina's Riley Baugus. Riley not only provided the singing voice for the character Pangle, played by Ethan Suplee, but he also hand-crafted the reproductions of Civil War era banjos seen in the film. Appearing with Riley will be the Stuart Brothers, Trevor and Travis, identical twins from Bethel, North Carolina. Travis plays their great-uncle Austin Starney's banjo, and Trevor follows in the musical footsteps of their fiddling grandfather, the Reverend Henry King, a Methodist preacher, mortician, and barber who loved to stay up all night playing for dances. The twins have performed as a duo for over 25years, and have brought their music all over America and Europe.
In the tiny town of Horsefly, British Columbia, Pharis and Jason Romero build banjos and play guitar and banjo to accompany themselves on the old time songs they love. Their tightly woven harmonies embellish old time country songs about hard living, loss, and love. Their recent album, A Passing Glimpse, was the winner of the Americana Album of the Year at the 11th Annual Independent Music Awards.
The Stairwell Sisters formed in the hills of San Francisco in 2000. With Lisa Berman on dobro, Evie Ladin on clawhammer banjo, Martha Hawthorne on bass, Stephanie Prausnitz on fiddle, and Sue Sandlin on guitar and tiple, this "all-gal old-time teardown" features intricate instrumentals, hair-raising harmonies, and red-hot buckdancing. They've played everywhere from Scotland to Lincoln Center to Hardly Strictly, and we’re pleased to welcome them back to the BOTMC!
