Berkeley’s Barbara Higbie is a master of piano and violin who combines technical brilliance with the pure joy of playing. Her unique compositions weave together elements of jazz, folk, and classical with the music of Ghana and Brazil. Oh, and she also sings like a dream. She has been nominated for a Grammy award, won Bammy awards, performed on more than 65 albums, including one with Santana, two with Teresa Trull, and three with Montreux, the band she co-founded with Darol Anger. In 2011, she was the first Artist in Residence at Yoshi’s, an experience that inspired several ongoing collaborations, including Hill to Hollers with Laurie Lewis and Linda Tillery. In the words of the Los Angeles Times, Barbara is a “jolt of bright sunlight” – and everyone in the audience feels her warmth.

Tonight, she celebrates the release of her fifth solo album, Scenes from Life / Cinemusic: Movie Music for the 21st Century, with help from several friends, including Linda Tillery on vocals, harmonica, and percussion, Katrina Krimsky on piano, Aryeh Frankfurter on violin, viola, cello, and nyckelharpa, and other special guests. The album features original solo piano compositions, a duet with Katrina Krimsky on piano and Barbara on violin, and a collaboration with a stringed orchestra featuring Joan Jeanrenaud of Kronos Quartet fame on cello. Join us for what promises to be a special performance from a perennial Freight favorite and her friends!
