Anais MitchellAnais Mitchell is a folk music marvel. The Independent on Sunday calls her "the most engaging, and in some ways, most original artist currently working in the field of new American 'folk' music." She's earned such praise, not only because of her wonderful voice and expressive guitar playing, but because she writes songs that are simultaneously political and personal, philosophical and poignant. "Terrific," Pitchfork calls her. She "is a skilled storyteller, and her delivery gives an emotional complexity that welcomes and even demands repeated listens."

Anais grew up on a farm in Vermont, began writing songs at 17, and recorded her first album at 21, in 2002. She went on to win the prestigious New Folk award at the Kerrville Folk Festival, and has since recorded seven more albums, including her remarkable folk-opera Hadestown in 2010, the epic Young Man in America in 2012, her award-winning collaboration with Jefferson Hamer Child Ballads in 2013, and, most recently, xoa, which distills her music to its essence: voice, guitar, extraordinary songs. "When I was coming of musical age, I was really into the coffeehouse scene and Dar Williams and Ani DiFranco, and all those characters were touring solo at the beginning and I would always be disappointed when they finally started having a budget to have drums and bass and stuff," Anais says. "And of course, as soon as I could afford a band, I had one, too. But I always wanted to just make a record of the songs as they were written." Now she's made it, and tonight at the Freight we¹ll get to hear those stunning songs as they were meant to be heard!
