Three modern guitar masters with global perspectives take solo turns on our stage!

Known for his technique, innovation, and compelling compositions, Bay Area-based Alex de Grassi is one of the world's top fingerstyle, steel-string acoustic guitarists. He established himself as a player and composer in the late 1970s with his classic recording, Turning Back (Windham Hill), which Acoustic Guitar magazine recently cited as one of the top ten "essential fingerstyle recordings" of all time, and his 1998 The Water Garden was nominated for a Grammy. Alex has continued to expand his repertoire to include interpretations of jazz classics and folk melodies from around the world. Driven by a unique sense of composition, each of his intricate pieces is a tapestry that weaves melody, counter-melody, bass, harmony, rhythm, and cross-rhythms into a unified whole.

Familiar to Freightgoers for his wide-ranging guitar collaborations as well as for his membership in the inimitable Cheap Suit Serenaders, Bob Brozman is a guitarist like no other. A master of slide, fingerstyle, and percussive guitar, Bob is a non-stop world traveler and tireless researcher in ethnomusicology. His work with musicians from around the world in the past several years—from Hawaiian slack key master George Kahumoku to stringbands in Papua New Guinea—has marked him as not only a virtuoso musician and slide guitarist, but also as a pioneer in finding a common thread among global musical cultures. Bob was just voted "Best World Guitarist" in Guitar Player magazine's 2010 Readers' Choice Awards.

Born in Rawlins, Wyoming, fingerstyle guitar ace Walter Strauss looks to the vast spaces of the American West for his musical inspiration. Rooted in American folk forms, Walter's music evokes far reaches of the globe as well: he's worked with musicians from West Africa to Australia and Finland. Walter weaves threads of world music, American roots, and jazz into a brand uniquely his own as he layers highly articulated melodies and harmonies, rhythms and counter-rhythms in a way that gives the impression he is playing several instruments at once.
