A singing, songwriting, Nashville-based clawhammer banjo player with a deep affinity for Chinese culture, Abigail Washburn is a bracing revelation to American old time music traditions. Attuned to the present and the future as much as the past, and every bit as interested in the global as she is in the local, Abigail pairs venerable folk elements with far-flung sounds, and the results feel both strangely familiar and unlike anything anybody’s ever heard before.

Abigail burned up stages across the country as a member of the all- female stringband Uncle Earl, and continued to expand her reach with her Sparrow Quartet, with Ben Sollee, Casey Driessen, and Bela Fleck joining in building a superlative musical bridge between American and Chinese folk music. Abigail’s new CD, City of Refuge (Rounder), further extends her vision by blending old time and indie pop into lush settings for vignettes about people from all corners of the globe trying to find where they belong. Catchy hooks and toe-tapping grooves abound in any Abigail performance, so come prepared to find yourself humming her songs all the way home!
